Birth of Volcanic Islands: 3.5 Million Years of Geological Drama

The Galápagos Archipelago consists of 19 major islands and dozens of smaller islets in the Pacific Ocean 906 km west of the equator. When Charles Darwin visited here aboard H.M.S. Beagle in 1835, he noticed differently shaped finch beaks on separate islands and found the clue to the theory of evolution. The oldest island, Española in the east, is 3.5 million years old, while Fernandina in the west, still volcanically active, was born only 1 million years ago.

World of Endemic Species: Living Evidence of Evolution

Galápagos shows cases where species from the same ancestors independently evolved to match the environment of each island. Of 14 finch species, each lives on a different island, and the beak evolved into various shapes based on the feeding method. The Galápagos giant tortoise has different shell shapes by island and is the most famous endemic species. The marine iguana is the world's only sea lizard that swims and eats seaweed, and the Galápagos penguin is the only penguin species that can live at the equator.

What Darwin Saw: Evolution Decoded Through Finch Beaks

Darwin found the evidence of evolution in Galápagos. Large ground finch (large, stout beak): cracks seeds and large cactus fruits. Sharp-beaked ground finch: draws blood from the back of other birds. Cactus finch: gathers nectar from cactus flowers. Woodpecker finch (picks and scrapes): uses a thorn to dig out insects from wood. These diverse finch species are living proof of evolution through natural selection. In 1859, with the publication of On the Origin of Species, he fundamentally changed humanity's view of nature.

Ecological Crisis and Invasive Species

About 200 years after Darwin's visit, Galápagos faces a serious crisis. The #1 threat is invasive species. Goats, pigs, dogs, and cats brought by humans eat the eggs of endemic species, destroy their habitats, and spread disease. Because of the goats, the medium tree finch faced the risk of losing specimens created by 500,000 years of evolution within 15 years. Some areas are being restored through strict laws and removal programs, but about 38% of all Galápagos animals are under threat.

Present of Conservation and Scientific Research

Galápagos was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The Ecuadorian government protects 97% of the land area outside inhabited areas as national parks. The Charles Darwin Research Station breeds the Galápagos giant tortoise through artificial reproduction programs. Research in Galápagos plays a central role in proving Darwin's theory of evolution in real time.
