The Finches of the Galápagos: A Journey That Changed the World

In December 1831, 22-year-old Charles Darwin boarded HMS Beagle. He was a young man who had dreamed of becoming a clergyman, and this voyage was originally a British Royal Navy charting mission. But the five-year voyage would become the greatest turning point in the intellectual history of humanity. Sailing along the South American coast, Darwin found fossils of giant animals similar to but different from modern creatures in strata millions of years old. Why were extinct creatures similar to but different from current life? He found the clue to the answer in the Galápagos Islands. The finches of 13 islands all descended from the same ancestor, but their beak shapes had changed to match the food environment of each island. Finches on islands with small seeds had thin beaks; those on islands with hard nuts had thick, strong beaks. Darwin realized: traits suited to the environment are selected; unsuitable traits are eliminated. This is Natural Selection.

Natural Selection: The Principle of Design Without a Designer

Natural selection operates when three simple facts repeat across generations. ① Variation: within the same species, individuals differ slightly in traits (size, color, speed, etc.). ② Heredity: those traits are passed from parents to offspring. ③ Differential survival: individuals with traits better suited to their environment survive and reproduce more. When these three repeat over thousands of generations, the trait distribution of the whole population gradually shifts. That is evolution. The critical point is that there is no purpose. The giraffe's long neck did not grow 'in order to reach leaves' — it is the result of longer-necked individuals surviving more often. There is no direction, no plan, no designer. Only the repetition of variation and selection. Given millions of years, this simple process produces eyes, wings, brains, and even language.

Natural Selection

The process by which individuals better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, causing advantageous traits to accumulate over generations.

Speciation

The process by which one species diverges into two or more new species, occurring when populations evolve independently due to geographic or reproductive isolation.

Adaptation

Common Descent

The principle that all life on Earth descended from a single common ancestor, diverging over billions of years. The foundational concept of the tree of life.

Mutation
