The Finches of the Galápagos: A Journey That Changed the World
In December 1831, 22-year-old Charles Darwin boarded HMS Beagle. He was a young man who had dreamed of becoming a clergyman, and this voyage was originally a British Royal Navy charting mission. But the five-year voyage would become the greatest turning point in the intellectual history of humanity. Sailing along the South American coast, Darwin found fossils of giant animals similar to but different from modern creatures in strata millions of years old. Why were extinct creatures similar to but different from current life? He found the clue to the answer in the Galápagos Islands. The finches of 13 islands all descended from the same ancestor, but their beak shapes had changed to match the food environment of each island. Finches on islands with small seeds had thin beaks; those on islands with hard nuts had thick, strong beaks. Darwin realized: traits suited to the environment are selected; unsuitable traits are eliminated. This is Natural Selection.
