The Road to the Throne
Sejong (1397-1450) was born as the third son of King Taejong. Originally far from the line of succession, he won Taejong's favor through scholarship and virtue and ascended to the throne at 22 in 1418. In the early years, Taejong ruled as senior king, holding military authority, and Sejong focused on domestic governance. True direct rule began after Taejong's death in 1422. Sejong was so passionate about scholarship that records note his eyesight worsened from reading too many books. He was already one of Joseon's foremost scholars before becoming king.
