Era and Background

In the 16th century, Joseon faced domestic strife and foreign threats after 200 years of relative peace. Factional politics, military neglect, and Jurchen threats in the north coincided with Japan's ambitions for continental expansion after its reunification. Yi Sun-sin was born into a military family, passed his military exams late at 32, served as a low-ranking officer guarding borders, and stepped onto the stage of history when appointed Naval Commander of Jeolla Left Province at 47.
