Pax Mongolica Period
The fall of Baghdad (1258) is one of the most tragic events in history. The Caliph and hundreds of thousands of residents were massacred, and the vast library collections of the House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikmah) were thrown into the Tigris River. Records speak of the river running black with scholars' ink. Yet simultaneously, the Silk Road under Mongol rule became the safest trade route in history.
Pax Mongolica (c. 1250–1350) was the era when all of Eurasia became a single safe trading space under Mongol rule. During this period, Marco Polo traveled from Venice to China, and Ibn Battuta from North Africa to China. Gunpowder, the compass, printing, the Black Death — all spread across East and West during this period.
